Is education really educating the children for life or destroying their future. The news report that a four-year-old child was locked up in a dog cage by his teacher at a private school in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly as punishment for talking in class.
Kerala woke up with a shocking news. The incident reported inTrivandrum, where a UKG child was put into a dog cage for taking in the class. The incident has caused social reaction and a large news coverage.
However, I feel it should not die of like any other news which gains attention as abandoned after sometime. Incidents of this sorts calls for a greater reflection on the role of schools and teachers in the life of students.
It is so said these things happen in a country where we are tough to respect the teacher as god (Matha, Pitha, guro deva). The teacher is the one who removes the evil of ignorance form the life of every child.
But today when education become a business, sadly we lose the values it needs to impart in the life of the students.
Incidents of this sorts also calls for an investigation towards the frustrations the teachers are experiencing for the recent past reports many incidents of this sorts compare to the olden times. When punishment was considered to be good. Then how come today when physical punishment is a crime, incidents of this sorts are on the increasing side?
It is very apt to remember the Poem of Karl Gibran on Children at this moment
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable. (Source)
However, I would like ask:
- Is education a business or a formation of a future generation?
- Does not our teachers deserve a decent salary (especially referring to the private schools)?
- How can we work as society to remove the hurts that the care takers impart in the young minds?
Actions begins with thinking, what do you think about it? Pls. make a comment.
