Who is the greatest?

Mk 9: 30-37

‘Who is the greatest?’ Jesus asks this question in today’s gospel, for the disciples were arguing among themselves to prove who is greater.

He answered them saying, whoever wishes to be first shall be the servant of all and the last of all. It is a spirituality of self-empting; I am to give for the sake of the other. In life we experience that, it takes more courage to forgive than to fight our enemy. It takes more courage to serve than to be served. In serving I am called to lose all I have for the sake of the other, however substandard the other may appear. The greatness is to see and appreciate the invaluable (in the appearance) as valuable to make a difference in the life of the other and in the world.
